With two stakes victories and a five-win day, Joel Rosario was voted the Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for April 27th-May 3rd. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.

Flying in from Florida to compete in major stake races during the final weekend of the Oaklawn meet, Joel Rosario was victorious on Friday aboard the three-year-old colt, Man in the Can in the $165,000 Arkansas Breeders’ Championship Stakes and returned on Saturday to take the second division of the Arkansas Derby (Gr.1) aboard undefeated Nadal.

In Friday’s 7th race, Rosario entered the starting gate aboard the Rainbow Stakes winner, Man in the Can in the Arkansas Breeders’ Championship Stakes. The Arkansas bred colt broke well, was forwardly placed, shook clear from the leader, and prevailed by a neck for trainer Ron Moquett. The seasoned veteran completed the day with a second-place finish in the Gardenia Stakes aboardComical for trainer Steve Asmussen and finished third in the Fantasy Stakes (G3) aboard Shedaresthedevil for conditioner Brad Cox.

The journeyman returned on Saturday taking the first race aboard Timely Tradition ($4.80) and was also victorious on his next two riding assignments, Endorsed ($6.80) in the 6th and Hunt the Front($7.00) in the 7th. Rosario again returned to the winner’s circle in the 10th, aboard Rushie ($8.00) for trainer Michael McCarthy.

In the signature race of the meet, the 84th running of the Arkansas Derby (G1), Bob Baffert gave Rosario a leg up on Rebel Stakes winner, Nadal. The well-bred colt by Blame was allowed to settle early just off the pace, rating nicely before pressuring the leader around the turn. Nadal took command when turning for home and shook clear to win by three lengths.

Joel Rosario finished the week maintaining a 50% win percentage and was in the money on 83% of his mounts. With six wins, one second, and three thirds, he led the Nation in earnings for the week totaling $594,777.

Rosario has won 59 of 266 starts this year and his mounts have earned $4,956,228. He has won 2,890 of 15,746 lifetime career mounts with earnings exceeding $218 million.
