Coady PhotogrpahyJockey Joel Rosario won three stake races during the opening week of Belmont Parks’ fall meeting and still found time to get away to Indiana Downs to capture a fourth stake race. That effort helped him win the Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for September 8th – September 13th. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.

After finishing a solid sixth in the rider standings at Saratoga over the summer Rosario is the leading rider after one week of racing with six wins.

Five of those wins at Belmont came for Rosario on Saturday, September 12th. The biggest of those five wins came aboard Godolphin Racing’s Sentiero Italia who turned in her second straight standout performance to claim the Grade II $500,000 Sands Point Stakes for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.

“I ended up on the lead and took it from there. She was very comfortable,” Rosario said. “She was galloping along. She’s honest. She gives it when you ask her, she just keeps going. I was happy I was a little closer, because last time it took just a little bit of time to get her into the race and then she just runs all day.”

A mid-week run to Indiana was worth it for Rosario when he captured the Indiana Downs Centaur Stakes on Wednesday September 9th aboard Coutier for trainer Bill Mott. Selected as the favorite in the nine-horse field, Courtier and Joel Rosario began their journey from the far outside post and rallied to win the $200,000 feature race.

“He (Courtier) broke on the outside and was a little slow today,” said Rosario. “He was nice and comfortable, so I didn’t want to pressure him. He responded and he got the job done. He’s a very nice horse and I want to thank all the connections for letting me ride.”

For the week Rosario finished with 17- 7- 3- 2 with $ 985,960.
