A trio of stakes wins over the holiday weekend helped Kendrick Carmouche earn Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for January 9 – January 16, 2017. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
Carmouche led all North American jockeys by stakes earnings for the week, with $198,750 from his four stakes mounts. Friday the 13th proved to be good luck for Carmouche, who won the $100,000 Ladies Handicap aboard Wonder Gal ($5.00) in a wire-to-wire, 13-length victory at Aqueduct. On Sunday, January 15, he notched his second stakes victory in the $100,000 Busanda Stakes with Lockdown ($6.60), defeating heavy favorite Libby’s Tail by over two lengths. Finally, Carmouche took the only graded stakes of the weekend at Aqueduct with Green Gratto ($7.30) in the $100,000 Toboggan (G3) on Monday.
In addition to leading North American jockeys by stakes earnings for the week, Carmouche was second by total earnings for the week. He is second on the total earnings leaderboard among all North American jockeys to date in 2017.
At Aqueduct, Carmouche is tied with Manuel Franco for wins in the current meet with ten victories each; however, Carmouche leads the meet by earnings. Last week, Carmouche had seven wins and three second-place finishes in 22 starts, with total earnings of $339,908. His win rate was 32% and he was in the money on 45% of his mounts.
Carmouche is a Louisiana native who started riding when he was 10 years old and galloping horses when he was 12. At the age of 16 he rode in his first race at Delta Downs. He also rode at Evangeline Downs and Parx before moving to the New York circuit.
