The only jockey to win three graded stakes last week, John Velazquez was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for August 19-25, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. John Velazquez had a mount in six of the seven stakes scheduled for the Saturday Saratoga card, including the featured race, the Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1).

Velazquez won back to back races with two upsets, starting with Mind Control ($22.80) in the $500,000 H. Allen Jerkins (G1) and Significant Form ($16.60) in the $400,000 Woodford Reserve Ballston Spa (G2).

His biggest win of the day came in the midsummer Derby, in which he and Code of Honor ($10.80) defeated post-time favorite Tacitus in the $1,250,000 Runhappy Travers (G1), the feature race of the meet for 3-year-olds.

Velazquez was also second in the $500,000 Ketel One Ballerina (G1) with Dawn the Destroyer and fourth in the Personal Ensign (G1) with Wow Cat.

Three stakes wins and several placings resulted in $1,369,875 in stakes earnings for the week for Velazquez, the highest among all North American jockeys. He also led by total earnings, adding $1,549,590 to his 2019 total of $13,027,733. His lifetime earnings exceed $409 million.

Velazquez won six races last week and finished in the money in 45% of his 20 starts. He has won 95 of his 496 races in 2019 and is 6,105 for 33,414 lifetime.

Voters also recognized Kevin Krigger, who won his 1,000th career race last week. Krigger’s milestone win happened at Emerald Downs during a four-win card.  The multiple stakes winning jockey now has 1,004 wins in 7,212 starts with career earnings of $19,343,563.
