122956Jockey Arnaldo Bocachica swept the early daily double on his way to capturing a total of three stakes races on West Virginia Breeders’ Classic night at Charles Town Racecourse on Saturday. Those wins helped Bocachica win the Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week award for October 5th – October 12th. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.

Arnaldo would kick off the biggest night for West Virginia bred horses with a victory in the $70,000 West Virginia Classic Distaff Stakes aboard Spa Creek getting up to win by a neck in the late stages for trainer Jeff Runco. It was only a short time later before Bocachico would reach the winners circle again when winning race two the $60,000 West Virginia Tourism Classic Stakes. He obliged the betting public when he booted home the 4/5 favorite Navy Ribbon from just off the pace to get the win.

All nine races on the October 10th card were stakes events for West Virginia bred thoroughbred runners. The final race of the night being the $60 West Virginia Lottery Classic Stakes. Arnaldo was able to bookend the card by winning that race with the speedy Slip The Cable who went wire-to-wire and drew away in the end to win by six lengths under Bocachica.

Bocachica, a native of Puerto Rico, was nominated for leading Apprentice Jockey in the 2007 Eclipse Awards. The award eventually went to Joe Talamo that year but Arnaldo was second in wins among all apprentice riders in 2007.

Arnaldo came to Charles Town in June 2006 after graduating from jockey’s school in Puerto Rico and won his first race in July of that year at the West Virginia thoroughbred oval. The 27 year-old rider notched his 1,000th victory in May of 2015 at Charles Town Racecourse and is currently the second leading rider in the standings with 134 wins.

For the week Arnaldo had 6 wins from just 18 mounts with one second placing and four third place finishes. His in-the-money percentage was 61% and he amassed $170,732 in total earnings for the week.
