Flavien Prat returned to the saddle at Santa Anita on Monday to win two graded stakes and be named the Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for December 19 – 26, 2016. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.

The stars aligned for Prat, who had eight mounts on opening day at Santa Anita. He won two of the four graded stakes on the card, including the Grade 1, $300,000 La Brea aboard Constellation ($27.00) for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. The 3-year-old daughter of Bellamy Road made her California debut and won her first graded stakes, defeating Finley’sluckycharm in a game stretch battle.

Prat returned to the winner’s circle in the last race of the day, the Grade 2 $200,000 Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes, in which he rode favorite Conquest Enforcer ($5.60) to a 1 ¼ length victory.

Prat, the co-leading rider at Del Mar during the 2016 summer meet, led the rider standings at Del Mar in the fall until an accident at the start of a race forced him to sit out the remainder of the meet. After a short break to recover, he returned to riding on December 26 for the first time since being hospitalized on November 27. Prior to the fall Del Mar meet, Prat had celebrated his first Breeders’ Cup victory aboard Obviously in the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.

Prat also finished third in two races earlier in the day, ending the day with a 25% win rate and finishing in the money on half of his mounts. He was the leading North American jockey by both total earnings ($314,475) and stakes earnings ($300,690) for the week.

To date in 2016, Prat has won 167 of his 920 starts and ranks 11th among North American jockeys with $13,185,119 in total earnings.

Due to holiday racing schedules, the statistics used for the Jockey of the Week ballot spanned Monday, December 19th through Monday, December 26th.
