The only jockey to win multiple stakes last week, Javier Castellano was named Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week title for January 14-20, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Javier Castellano led all the North American jockeys by stakes earnings last week and was the only jockey to win two stakes, both at Gulfstream.

Castellano had eight mounts on the Sunshine Millions card and won three, including two of the four Sunshine Millions stakes. He won the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Turf Stakes with Big Changes ($3.60) by a length and a half for trainer Brad Cox.

He followed up the first stake with a win in a maiden special weight, then returned to the winner’s circle three races later aboard Starship Jubilee ($4.20). The pair won the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Stakes by over four lengths, this time for trainer Kevin Attard.

In his 20 starts last week, Castellano won six races for a win rate of 30%; he finished in the money on 45% of his mounts. He has won 13 of his 55 starts in 2019 and is 5,036 for 27,617 lifetime.

Castellano was the leading jockey by stakes earnings, with $183,450 earned last week, and he was the second leading jockey for total money earned, adding $307,560 to his 2019 total of $630,710. In his career to date, he has earned over $317 million.

A native of Venezuela, Castellano began riding in the United States in 1997. The four-time Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Jockey was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 2017. Last fall, he reached a career milestone, becoming the 34th jockey to reach the 5,000-win mark.
