Ricardo Santana, Jr. stood out to voters with his performances on Kentucky Derby week, and he was selected as Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for April 29 – May 5, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. After a tumultuous Kentucky Derby weekend, many jockeys deserved recognition for their accomplishments. But even among the tough company of talented jockeys on the ballot, Ricardo Santana, Jr. stood out to voters win an impeccable stakes record and strong metrics across the board.
Santana won four races on Derby Day at Churchill Downs. He started with a win in the $500,000 Humana Distaff (G1) with Mia Mischief ($25.00), the second highest price in the field. He won the next race as well, the $500,000 Churchill Downs Stakes, this time aboard the post-time favorite, Mitole ($6.40); the duo cleared the field by over three lengths in the seven-furlong event.
After the running of the Kentucky Derby, Santana returned to winner’s circle to sweep the late double, winning the penultimate race on the card with Limonite ($13.20) and the finale with Rotation ($9.00).
Santana had a great start to the weekend as the winner of the $500,000 La Troienne (G1) with She’s a Julie ($12.00) in an emotional win for trainer Steve Asmussen. Later on the card he also hit the board with Lady Apple in the $1,250,000 Kentucky Oaks (G1).
Thanks to his three stakes victories, Santana was the fourth leading rider by stakes earnings, with $1,042,290 earned last week. He was the third leading rider overall by total earnings, adding $1,364,911 to his 2019 total of $5,959,050. He has earned $59,328,861 in his career to date.
Santana’s well-rounded statistics also included a strong number of wins and win percentage for the week. With nine wins, he was the second leading jockey by wins for the week. He finished in the money on 45% of his mounts and maintained a win rate of 31%.
In 2019, Santana has won 90 of his 400 starts, and he is 1,217 for 7,457 lifetime.
