Jockey Corey Lanerie will return to the saddle this Saturday at Arlington Park, riding for the first time since his wife’s sudden death just 15 days ago. Shantel Lanerie was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in early 2018, according to, but died of sepsis on June 22.

“I don’t know if I’m strange or just strong, but I know my wife’s in a better place,” Lanerie said. “She would want me to be happy. She’d be like, ‘You need to go out and make money.’”

Lanerie hasn’t ridden since June 17 at Churchill Downs. His first mount on Saturday, for trainer Wesley Ward, is named Con Te Partiro, loosely translated as “Time to Say Goodbye.”
