HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Jockey Edgard Zayas was expected Tuesday to remain in Aventura Hospital for a couple more days following Monday surgery to repair a broken femur in his right leg.

“It looks like he’ll be out for three months,” said friend and valet Nelson Figueroa.

Zayas, who ranked sixth in the Championship Meet standings with 15 after capturing the Gulfstream Park West title, was unseated during the running of Sunday’s fifth race, when he his mount, Kitten Killer, collapsed on the backstretch with a shoulder injury.

The 25-year-old jockey, who notched his 200th win of 2018 last Friday, has been a mainstay in South Florida since arriving from his native Puerto Rico in 2012. An Eclipse finalist in 2013 after winning 203 races as an apprentice, Zayas has ridden 1297 winners.
